Damage at the Horseshoe Bay boat ramp

$250,000 will be spent at Horseshoe Bay according to Townsville Mayor Les Tyrell at a press conference yesterday, following the damage wrought by wild weather from ex-tropical cyclone Olga combined with king tides over the weekend.

Wednesday 24 February, from 5.30pm to 10pm at Peppers Blue On Blue, Tourism Operators & Businesses Magnetic Island (TOBMI), will host around 80 Visitor Information Centre staff from around Queensland who will be visiting Magnetic Island this month to see what the island has to offer tourists.

It looked like a Tsunami at Horseshoe yesterday

It is hard not to compare the sensational shots taken during and after Horseshoe Bay's wild king tide yesterday to images of a tsunami. And out in the thick of it Magnetic Times readers were taking some very memorable images to share with us all.

While Islanders were enjoying all the thrills of yesterday morning's king tide combined with 428mm of rain (since he 24th when this monsoon started), there was a serious side that few could ignore. Magnetic Island's beaches, particularly Nelly Bay beach was again seriously undermined and eroded by the ever advancing shoreline.

Taking in the tide at Horseshoe Bay
|
This morning, a 4.07m king tide slammed into Horseshoe Bay beach with the assistance of a strong northerly wind following the wake of the monsoon trough associated with ex-tropical cyclone Olga. Magnetic Times was unable to cover the event due to flooded creeks isolating our residence and office at Bolger Bay but Horseshoe Bay local, Ms Pat Trewin, came to our help with some great Horseshoe high tide action shots.

A high tide and storm last January
|
This week sees the first and highest king tides for 2010 and with recent lows and cyclonic weather around we should hope no cyclone decides to visit us on Friday or even worse, Saturday morning.

At 10.55am this morning the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a warning that damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall from ex-tropical cyclone Neville are forecast in the Townsville area tonight.

Sunferries have advised Magnetic Times that tonight's services have been cancelled and Fantasea Cruising Magnetic have advised that their 6.05pm service from Townsville has also been cancelled due to deteriorating weather conditions.
