Perishing periwinkles

Florence periwinkles before weeding Following is a very encouraging report from the volunteer weeders group who have been systematically reducing the periwinkle weed population at Magnetic Island's beautiful Florence Bay.

We know that readers of the Magnetic Times are eager to hear how the weed removers/periwinkle patrol or Vinca vigilantes of Florence Bay are coming along with their mammoth task.

With some assistance from Scouts and Rovers, we now have 60% of the area WEED FREE!

After weeding

There are nine large piles of the weed for visitors to Florence Bay to wonder at.

Not only does removing the weed create the space for the local indigenous plants to regenerate , periwinkle may actually inhibit other plant growth chemically as well as occupying habitat.

If you have been thinking about joining us TAKE THE STEP - ring Carolyn 4774 1414.

Next weed clearing session is Saturday 5th July at 8.30am at the Florence Bay carpark. Volunteering can be 'once off', occasional or regularly each fortnight and remember, volunteering can be fun! Contact me now and leave a message.
