June 9th 2009
Fire season starts today
The first planned burn of the 2009 fire season will be conducted today, Tuesday 9th June. The cool weather conditions are ideal for a low intensity slow moving fire along the ridge line above Bolger Bay. The Department of Environment and Resource Management will be using a helicopter to ignite the fire in the afternoon. The fire is expected to burn during the afternoon and extinguish overnight.
The planned burn will target a higher altitude mixed Eucalypt woodland composed of alternating stands of Brush Box and Acacia vegetation. The burn will help to maintain the diversity of woodland vegetation types as well as reduce the fuel load in the hills.
Keep checking Magnetic Times for more information about planned burns.
