Islanders invited to fire season presentation
With a lengthy planned burn around the upper ridges of Magnetic Island this month it is timely that a Community Fire Season Presentation has been planned for this Sunday to give Magnetic Island residents an opportunity to learn more about fire management on the island. Presentations will be given by, Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) Ranger-In-Charge, Mr Patrick Centurino and, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) I-zone officer, Mr Ray Lawrence
Mr Centurino will speak about the Magnetic Island fire management program while Mr Lawrence will advise residents on how to be a Bushfire Prepared Community.
“These presentations will be of interest to anyone wanting to learn more about the annual planned burn program, why it’s important for the island and how the community can help prepare for the fire season,” Mr Centurino said.
“We’ll also be showing people how DERM plans and conducts strategic burns for conservation and fuel reduction outcomes.
“The outcomes of the latest fire on Magnetic Island will be discussed and explored as part of the presentation.”
Mr Lawrence said residents living close to bushland were encouraged to know how to prepare their properties and take precautions to ensure safety during the wildfire season.
“Bushfire Prepared Communities’ information packages will be available and QFRS officers will be on hand to speak with anyone wanting to know what they can do to be prepared in the event of a wildfire.”
The presentation will be held on Sunday 28th June, from 12 – 3pm at the RSL Hall in Hayles Avenue Arcadia. A free sausage sizzle and light refreshments will also be provided.
The event is a joint initiative of DERM andQFRS.
