One week left to apply to Ergon Energy Envirofund

North Queensland community groups undertaking energy conservation and environmental projects have a week left to apply for funding from Ergon Energy’s new $100,000 Envirofund.

General Manager Operations Northern Paul Ryan is urging groups who had been thinking about applying to get their application in by the closing date of July 31, and to alert other groups to the fund’s existence.

“The Ergon Energy Envirofund is a new initiative aimed at helping Queensland communities work towards a more sustainable future,” said Mr Ryan “and I want to encourage local groups to get out there and make use of it.”

Mr Ryan said the Envirofund would provide $100,000 in grants in the first year to not-for-profit community groups and organisations for environmental initiatives in their local communities. Each project will be judged on its merits and grants could range from as little as $200 up to $20,000 or more.

Preference will be give to projects which:
* reduce energy consumption or encourage wise energy use
* reduce greenhouse gas emissions
* use or promote renewable energy alternatives (solar, wind, hydro or biomass).

However those that protect, maintain or re-establish natural environments in community spaces, protect wildlife or provide other environmental benefits will also be considered.

Mr Ryan said grants from the fund could be used to kick start innovative projects that benefit the environment through either direct action or education.

“The possibilities are endless, and we are really looking forward to hearing from groups right across regional Queensland with great ideas on how we can help shape a sustainable future for the planet.”

Application details are now available at the Ergon Energy website at www.ergon.com.au.

Applications for this first round of grants close on 31 July.
