Beat boxing with Beaujangles
It's a late call but one well worth a listen. For any family with kids over 11 who are into modern music-making, there is a very talented beat-box artist giving lessons - yet another Bay Days event - at the MI State School this week and, although he has run his first class today, Beau “Beaujangles” O'Brien says, “It doesn't take long to pick up the basics” and is keen to see more young people down at the school undercover area to make some beat-box sounds. And if you don't know what beat-box is...According to Beau, “Beat-boxing is a vocal imitation of drum machines. It originated from the old hip-hop drum machines. When musicians couldn't afford drum machines they made their own sounds and it spun off from there into its own culture.”
Today, members of the Jay Walkers, Magnetics well-known teen band, were spending some time with Beau and he is hoping there will be a group of young musos helping him with some hot vocal rhythms when Magnetic Island Musos Club presents its Bay Days Cabaret on Friday night at the Solar Cities Smart Lifestyle Centre in Horseshoe Bay.
At 21, Beau is an aspiring music artist from Townsville who has delved deep into the arts of beat-boxing, lyricism, DJ'ing, music production and multi-vocalism. Beau, who says he is influenced by a huge number of beat-box artists but names Rahzel, Kenny Muhammad (click here) and Killa Kela as favourites, has a wealth of knowledge he's happy to share.
Working professionally as a music artist since 2005, Beau has won numerous competitions, performed around Australia and was even a supporting act for the AND1 Mix Tape Tour in 05'.
Beau will be teaching the basic fundamentals of beat-boxing, breath control, rhythm constructs, history of beat-boxing and vocal tricks, that will be sure to surprise yourself with! So come along on the (details of workshops) and be ready to have a good time!
The next two sessions are from 2pm to 4.30pm tomorrow and Wednesday at the undercover area at MI State School in Nelly Bay. Beaujangles teaching is aimed at young people aged 11 and over so why not check him out. Sessions are just $5.
