Have your say on alcohol-related violence
A Queensland parliamentary committee wants to hear your views on alcohol-related violence at its Townsville public hearing. The Law, Justice and Safety Committee is conducting an inquiry into alcohol-related violence, with a focus on community safety and preventative measures to reduce levels of alcohol-related violence.
The Committee will hold a public hearing in Townsville on Friday 16 October 2009 from 9am to 11am. It will be held in Room 3 of the Reid Park Pit Complex, Boundary Road Townsville. Morning Tea will be provided.
Ms Barbara Stone MP, Chair of the Committee said: “The inquiry will help us to understand why incidents of alcohol-related violence occur, and to provide practical and effective solutions.
“We know that this matter cannot be addressed overnight and we will be looking for long-term solutions to bring about a shift in cultural attitudes to alcohol consumption.
“We’re holding this public hearing as we want to hear from the people of Townsville about how the situation can be addressed.
We want to hear from young people, emergency workers, health workers, police, industry bodies, advisory organisations – anyone who can provide the Committee with relevant information to ensure that our recommendations will be far-reaching and effective in reversing this trend of alcohol-related violence.”
Matters the Committee seeks information on include: • harm minimisation measures – What does and does not work? • the impact, if any, of late opening hours and the 3am lockout on the incidence of alcohol-related violence. • the flow-on issues for emergency service workers, police, and frontline health workers – How can this impact be reduced? • education campaigns – Are they effective? How can they be improved? • the role of parents in influencing the attitudes of young Queenslanders towards alcohol consumption - How can parents be supported to provide a positive influence regarding alcohol consumption? • the economic cost of alcohol-related violence.
