‘What happened to…’ calendar still available
History is about change and Magnetic Island History and Craft Centre's 2010 calendar titled, "What happened to..." certainly illustrates changes on Magnetic Island: some that brought turmoil and unrest and others that happened almost without notice. But if you want to avoid asking, "What happened to the calendar?" then we advise you to contact MIHHC soon - it's going fast. One major change occurred on the Nelly to Picnic Bay hill where, back in the 1950s one of the two “Sentinels” (two enormous granite boulders which marked the entrance point to Nelly Bay along the original track) was blown up to make way for the new road connecting the bays. Just last year a protruding section of the remaining Sentinel was blown off to make the walking space wider. The images we reproduced here show just how dramatic that change was.

The calendar cover features Bright Point – the site of the most contentious and obvious physical change made on the Island in recent times. The publication includes photographs of present day locations so the physical changes can be compared with past images. ‘The contrast between then and now is often quite startling!’ notes MIHCC president Zanita Davies.
