100 kph wind & heavy rain warning
At 10.55am this morning the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a warning that damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall from ex-tropical cyclone Neville are forecast in the Townsville area tonight.The message was broadcast by the Australian Early Warning Network and includes the following:
For people in Herbert and Burdekin and Central Coast districts between Townsville and Sarina. Issued at 10:55 am on Sunday 24 January 2010
Synoptic Situation: Tropical Cyclone Olga continues to move towards the North Tropical Coast district[see separate cyclone warnings]. Ex tropical cyclone Neville is currently southwest of Willis Island and is forecast to move onto the coast south of Townsville on Sunday night.
Heavy rainfall is expected to develop late this evening and continue on Monday and may lead to localised flash flooding.
Damaging wind gusts to 100kph are expected to develop late this evening and continue through the night before easing early on Monday.
The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:
· seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees · secure loose outdoor items · beware of fallen trees and powerlines · avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters
