Fuel reduction planned burns in Picnic Bay and Cockle Bay
Last night residents of Nelly Bay witnessed a vivid display when the planned burns taking place above the end of Sooning Street lit up some highly combustable but fire-resistant pandanus trees. The burning program is continuing while the ideal conditions of still cool evenings persist. Following is the latest advice from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
Weather conditions continue to be ideal for planned burning on Magnetic Island.
Planned burning operations in Nelly Bay last week have been very successful. The low intensity fire has only travelling a short distance into the bushland creating a buffer of burnt country behind residential areas as planned.
Another planned burn will be conducted on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st June in bushland behind the Picnic Bay refuse station and golf club and along the road from Cockle Bay towards Bolger Bay.
As a result smoke will be seen coming from the hills between Nelly and Picnic Bays and Cockle Bay after midday.
These areas pose a particular fire hazard due to the significant fuel load resulting from dense Guinea Grass infestations.
The purpose of this burn will be to reduce the amount of fuel around the refuse station and Cockle Bay which is particularly important given that wildfires have historically tended to originate from these areas, especially in recent years.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, Townsville City Council and Department of Environment and Resource Management will work together to conduct the planned burns.
Traffic control will be in place and depending on wind direction and smoke some traffic disruptions may be experienced on the road between Nelly and Picnic Bays.
