New emergency helipad to open
Magnetic Island's new emergency helipad is about to open on the breakwater at Nelly Bay Harbour.Ambulance Officer in Charge Kerry Dillon told Magnetic Times, "There are a couple of things to be completed, like the wind sock installation, but it should be operational in a couple of days.
Kerry Dillon was however keen to let it be known that the public should be aware that choppers can land at the pad at any time of the day or night and that if they are in the vicinity to take care.
It is advised that people should go no closer than 40 metres from the helicopter as winds produced can throw sand and grit towards them and cause discomfort when the rotors are spinning.
Kerry Dillon has also acknowledged that on occasions vehicles have blocked access to the gate which is used by the ambulance to access the pad and is seeking the public's help in keeping this important emergency corridor clear at all times.
Members of the public who are using the recreational walking path, which passes by the pad, are also asked to remain clear of the helipad whilst it is in use.
