Eve's Droppings: Our Opera House

Digital graffiti says it all My Dear Drop - pets, I'm hearing lots of colourful descriptions for the not-so-colourful grey and patchy white-painted concrete block currently being erected at Nelly Bay Harbour. I've heard "Stalag Supermarket", "the Berlin Wallmart" and, "that ugly pile of crap" to name a few but when developer Noel Gordon told magnetictimes.com editor last week that, "People complained about the (Sydney) Opera House before it was finished", I was immediately struck at how wrongheaded we locals had been.

I sat back and pondered the genius of another great supermarket I have known. Woolworths in Townsville city. How I marvel at the grand sliding-door entrance every time I wander by, the Baroque flourish that announces the Parcel Pick-up, and haunting grace which pervades the semi-trailer loading bay. Gracious me - how had I gotten it all so wrong about this architectural coupe on Magnetic? Now I can hardly wait for the happy day when the IGA Opera House opens for its first concert with a comely Island teenager, mic in hand, soaring through her vocal range with an immortal rendition of the "Price check Wayne" aria.

Parking however may be a different story. Mr Gordon has also confirmed his ownership of over 40 parking spaces within the already underspaced carpark. I hear he plans to have his spaces re-signed to indicate short stay (shopper's parking) only. That's going to be fascinating when the wet season returns and locals decide not to ride their bikes or walk to the ferry and want to actually drive and park instead. Further down the track it gets tastier. When all those units planned for the harbourside get going - as we keep being assured they will - just where will anybody visiting them park too? Not that we couldn't see it coming. But it all lands back in the lap of hapless Queensland Transport - the government department left to carry the can - but who, my spies tell me, had never enough of a say in the planning period when State Development ruled the waves.

Photo image: Digital graffiti is my new way for people to express themselves in a public space without breaking the law. The graffiti is completely applied by computer graphics. I decided to pioneer the art as I am such a sweet person and would hate to deface the Island's Opera House as it forms. It really is fun if you have a paint program with a spray tool and there are no nasty chemicals to breath either. Why not make some on your favourite digital surface and send it in. If they aren't defamatory or too rude I'll exhibit them here for you. Eve

Dear Eve, yes, like you I'm sure many Islanders are looking forward to the grand opening of the new supermarket. From past experience it would seem that all the developers need to do is throw a "community celebration" and involve a few local businesses, artists and musicians and a couple of minor celebs from Sydney and all will be forgiven. Dear Eve, As your correspondent Charles puts it .."love your work, Eve, love your work".... Thank you for enlightening readers on what appears as happening at Nelly Bay marina precinct. At first sight I thought it to be a transplanted test project for the divide under construction in Gaza or a prototype construction technique for Grozny. But a temple to commerce? In a marina precinct? Surely? But hey, relax. Doubtless a paint job [owner/builder chosen & designed?] will prove the solution to slab grey - something garishly colourful perhaps in keeping with tasteful new money decor concepts? A perfect accompaniament to flashy gin palaces moored amongst a forest of pontoons set to a backdrop of new tuscan [very island!] villas all up close and personal sharing sonorous Tom Jones platters as musical Prozac to drown the sound of continuous commercial activity like transport. All tastefully counterpointed by terminal industrial complex design peppered with the allure of mirage style imagery of blue sky accommodation. Now all that could be said to be a cynics description of what occurs within the confines of a marina development precinct.I would care not to believe I am such but what appears inescapable is the sneaking suspicion that all is both on course and in keeping with this particular marina spirit. As to reflecting upon those so ardently enamoured of such precincts remains a moot point. On the matter of parking I am fascinated to learn that some 40 spaces are 'owned' by Mr Gordon. Why one would bother given the oft touted proclaimed sales success of the residential allotments whose denizens would presumably form the core of that particular retail cliental. Or is it because prospective residents will have need to deploy motorised walking frames when ducking over to purchase milk, papers and croissants? These presumably need to be parked outside as they would cause havoc in tight aisles. On matters of allusion to Opera House opposition this is somewhat disingenuous for I am old enough to recall a lot of the opposition was from those, or their supporters, who waxed lyrical about that site as a developers nirvana. Public iconography was to them best confined to Victorian style urinal rotundas in public parks. The fact of a recent multi residential construction adjacent to the Opera icon, known I understand as the 'toaster', would seem to bell the cat when it comes to matters of some developers aesthetics. Mr Gordon does not "own" any car parks at the ferry terminal....unless he also "owns" the Queensland Government. If you need to know who owns any part of Nelly Bay Harbour the ONLY place to check is the Titles Office. Nowhere else. No crap from real estate agents, no lies and advertorials from completely compromised tabloid 'journalists'. Just check the information yourself at the Titles Office. You'll be surprised to find who "owns" what at Nelly Bay Harbour.

I suggest a mural of what Nelly Bay used to look like, before someone bombed Bright Point.
