Meet the artist: Edwina George
Next Tuesday Magnetic Island will be host to a major Australian musician who will be here to meet, talk to and play for locals. She is the 2011 Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition, Open Winner and winner of the John Hopkins Fellowship Award, soloist violinist, Edwina George.
Edwina, a casual member of the Queensland Symphony and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria, is a scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music, studying with William Hennessey.
Her musical education began in Bundaberg, commencing violin lessons at age 4. She later played with the Queensland Youth Symphony, eventually as Assistant Concertmaster. She studied at the Queensland Conservatorium.
Her string quartet, Euphoria, won the Gertrude Langer Ensemble Prize, was selected as the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Young Australian Concert Artists, and toured regional Queensland with didgeridoo player William Barton for the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. They were featured on ABC Classic FM’s ‘Rising Stars’ Program.
After moving to Melbourne, she studied with Mark Mogilevski at the University of Melbourne, earning a Master of Music.
Her visit to Magnetic Island, is intended as a “meet the artist” occasion and Edwina will be here to speak and chat informally with Islanders.
Her programme will include Tchaikovsky Meditation & two movements of JS Bach’s Sonata – both works for solo violin - with the playing time lasting over 20 minutes.
Edwina is a casual member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestra Victoria.
