A 26-year-old British backpacker has been reported missing after not contacting friends since late last month.

Timothy Mounsey last contacted his girlfriend on November 21 at which time he was staying at the Globetrotters backpackers in Townsville.

Investigations by police suggest that Mr Mounsey left Townsville at the end of November and travelled to the Ayr or Bowen areas looking for work doing fruit or vegetable picking.

Mr Mounsey's family and girlfriend are keen to establish contact with him to ensure he is safe and well.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a proportionate build and brown hair.
