Smoke from Magnetic Island National Park
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service are planning to conduct a planned burn tomorrow Monday 23 May 2011 on Magnetic Island as part of the annual planned burn program if conditions are suitable. As a result, smoke will be seen coming from bushland behind properties on the north-eastern side of Nelly Bay around the All Seasons Resort area.
Monday presents a window of opportunity in the weather to conduct the first of series of small low-intensity planned burns that will take place over the next few months.
The aim of these planned burns is to reduce the fuel load around urban areas on the island and lessen the chance of a wildfire originating from these areas later in the year when conditions dry.
QPWS Rangers will be working with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and Department of Environment and Resource Management crews to conduct the planned burn.
