"Welcome" this Saturday
Simon (Vincent Lindon) is a swimming instructor who befriends Bilal (Firat Ayverdi), a young Iraqi Kurd trying to reach London to be with his fiancé. Unfortunately Bilal lacks the required documentation, so it looks like he might have to swim the channel. This is the scenario for "Welcome", the Magnetic Island Film Society's movie of the month screening at the All Seasons hotel this Saturday night.

"...other Magnetical matter" to open soon
It was Captain Cook in June 1770 who first sighted and named ‘Magnetical’ Island because his ‘Compass would not travis well when near it’. It remains a mystery why Cook believed ‘other Magnetical matter’ should have affected his compass – but it has not prevented people attempting to explain it with various theories. Likewise, there are many Island stories – other Magnetical matter – that are puzzling in some way or another and demand further investigation. And this is the theme for the soon-to-open, annual exhibition at the Magnetic Island History & Craft Centre and Museum in Picnic Bay

Now, ten years after that initial visit, Peter Kenyon is returning to Magnetic Island to speak at the AGM of Magnetic Island Community Development Association.

Islander is oldest in 1600km bike challenge
Three years ago a cyclist was tearing down the big hill into Horseshoe Bay around 60kph when the dreaded death wobbles set in. It was just before the final turn to the left where the rider, 61 year old Rob Jarvis from Nelly Bay, knew he couldn’t pull out. He doesn’t remember much else until the emergency crews found him in the scrub with a broken back, punctured lung, broken ribs, and a collar bone fracture. But as a testament to human fortitude and the fine work of the Magnetic Island Clinic, Rob Jarvis is about to set out on the most gruelling ride of his life - 1600kms from Brisbane to Townsville at 200kms per day but in support of a very good cause.
