Clayton and Julie with the offending coconuts
|
Arcadia Store's Julie Carmody and Clayton Scott were rudely awoken in the wee small hours of Saturday morning to learn that their shop's windows had been smashed and about $500 worth of goods stolen. But in a very tropical, Magnetic Island, twist the couple were soon to learn that the three youths, who allegedly broke in, smashed the windows by hurling coconuts at them.

In the year 2000 Magnetic Island was fortunate to welcome a truly remarkable man. It was a time following much division in the community and the, then, “Community and Commerce Association” had a small amount of funding and secured the services of Peter Kenyon, a community renewal and community development expert. A man described by MICDA President, Lorna Hempstead AM, as, "a fantastic personality". Now, ten years after that initial visit, Peter Kenyon is returning to Magnetic Island to speak at the AGM of Magnetic Island Community Development Association.

Smiddy Challenger Rob Jarvis
|
Three years ago a cyclist was tearing down the big hill into Horseshoe Bay around 60kph when the dreaded death wobbles set in. It was just before the final turn to the left where the rider, 61 year old Rob Jarvis from Nelly Bay, knew he couldn’t pull out. He doesn’t remember much else until the emergency crews found him in the scrub with a broken back, punctured lung, broken ribs, and a collar bone fracture. But as a testament to human fortitude and the fine work of the Magnetic Island Clinic, Rob Jarvis is about to set out on the most gruelling ride of his life - 1600kms from Brisbane to Townsville at 200kms per day but in support of a very good cause.

ALP candidate Tony Mooney, "would be happy to support an application ... to bring Radical Bay back into the Island’s national park network," and says he is, like all the other candidates, committed to complete the walkway from Nelly Bay to Arcadia. Lib/Nat candidate Ewen Jones asks, why alcoholics and drug addicts should expect others to pay for something that could have been avoided in the first place? Family First's Michael Punshon claims that the science for the carbon theory (re climate change) is flawed and corrupted while The Greens, Dr Mike Rubenach thinks a tax on junk food is a great idea. These are just some of the fascinating responses to questions you, our readers (and one from your Editor), have received from the field of candidates for our seat of Herbert after we invited questions for the candidates in our August 6 article "Let's ask them".
