Nuclear weekend
While many look forward to the cash injection into the community which occurs when a US military ship visits, Townsville activist, Pat Coleman reminds us, in the following letter, of the risks he believes exist and calls on Townsville City Council to enforce its nuclear free zone for the city. (Ed)The Townsville Bulletin reported on Monday that the USS Chafee will arrive in our port Saturday. This ship is an Arliegh Burke Class guided missile destroyer (read here) that carries BGM 109A Tomahawk Cruise Missiles (read here) & see also (here) & (here) & (here) & (here) & (here) & (here)
The Missiles are designed to carry what is known as a W80 -0 nuclear warhead (read here). And, whilst the Yanks have said they have removed all "non and sub strategic" nukes from their surface ships as part of NATO's reduced nuclear posture, (read here) the W80-0 attached to Tomahawks are not part of this category as they are an intermediate yield strategic nuke (read here). This is determined by Yield and range (read here).
NATO states that these weapons are not in the removed category (read here). They are being carried on this ship. If the yanks deny this or give an ambiguous answer, what faith can we place in their government, military, or even our own government since the Iraq fiasco?
Townsville is a nuclear free zone and has been so since 1986. And yet the council and government are allowing nuclear weapons with a yield of over 150 kilotons within walking distance of our homes and families. This ship is a great big floating dirty bomb waiting to happen*.
The yanks have no right to engage in the irresponsible act of bringing these things into our territory. They also have no right to say that anyone coming within 250 meters to complain about it, in our own country, can be shot. The Howard government is hypocritical if it pursues non-proliferation and yet gives right of entry to those carrying nukes.
I for one do not give the yanks permission to bring these things into my town, and I call on the Townsville City Council not to be hypocrites, and enforce their own nuke free zone.
*These weapons are not safe. It is reported that this ship carries no "reloads" for tomahawks, which means all missiles are in the over 50 launch tubes. The nukes will have cables disabled and the component explosives under refrigeration as fire can set off the conventional explosives used to detonate them. The safety features don't count on a chain reaction from exploding conventional warheads spreading the radioactive components of the nukes..
