At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Remembrance, or Armistice Day is commemorated around the world, particularly amongst Commonwealth countries, as a moment to remember those killed in the line of military duty. It will be observed again this Sunday on Magnetic Island.

As many locals would know, Magnetic Island’s RSL has been struggling for some time and, with the seasonal downturn of summer approaching, the little sub-branch - which provides a well-maintained community hall for the Island community's use - is facing another major challenge to keep afloat. It is however a challenge which can be overcome if only Islanders wish to enjoy this great facility a bit more.

Few may know that the Magnetic Island RSL has the largest Citizen's Auxilliary in Queensland with some 90 members. It is clearly a great expression of support for the organisation, which has also proudly maintained itself and activities without resorting to the use of poker machines. But while the RSL is clearly appreciated in the community who have been happy to take up membership in large numbers, sadly, just 5 Auxilliary members are actively participating with hands-on activities.

With the Climate Change Summit opening in Copenhagen today, Magnetic Island Nature Care Inc. has announced that they will hold a candlelight vigil at the RSL Arcadia Markets this Friday evening. This local action will join thousands of coordinated vigils in more than 100 countries as part of 350.org campaign called “The World Wants a Real Deal”.
