At Magnetic Island’s West Point there was a scattering of fishers along the beach famous for its scenic sunsets. Some were casting lines and others, nets. Nobody was catching much but the man I was assisting was. They weren’t edible, nor did they swim - for we weren’t working the waters but the sandy shore... for treasure!

Without a clear direction from her partner, Tony Cuthbertson, Magnetic Times has delayed it's posting of the very sad news that Carolyn Pike, a much-loved Islander, humanitarian, conservationist and keen yachtie, died suddenly on May 26 in Fiji, from a "ruptured berry aneurysm". Following is a message from Tony, received today, with some background to the tragic event which he wanted to share with all of his and Carolyn's friends and acquaintances.

Horseshoe's old girls and boys together again

Despite Magnetic Island’s overcast and cool weather, the Horseshoe Bay School Reunion gathering at the old school house was as warm as ever when 37 former students gathered to reminisce their happy times at the little school which opened in 1949 and was closed after Cyclone Althea in 1972.

On Friday, friends of Alan Green, a Magnetic Island resident of over 30 years gathered at Alma Bay to pay their last respects and scatter his ashes.
